The National Governing Body for the Sustainable African Forest Assurance Scheme (SAFAS) in the role of the Standard development body for the revision of the SAFAS standard, announces the working group members.

SAFAS now has the tools to assist timber growers of all scales to calculate and report on their carbon stocks and emissions. This tool is part of the Value Based Platform which allows growers to assessed their key sustainability risks.

The beginning of the mandated process to review, and if required, revise the PEFC endorsed SAFAS forest management certification standard was announced today by the SAFAS Council.

An estimated 25,000 timber growers living in Tribal Authorities make a substantial contribution South Africa’s timber industry. The majority of these growers are over 50 years old and many of them are women. The Tribal Authority areas were former “homeland areas” and as a result are remote and poorly serviced, with very few economic opportunities.
